New player here. After reading parts of the Dungeon Master’s Guide, I can see why many would be turned off by the “work” one puts into the organic nature of the game.

When you say 'new player', I guess that means you're playing 5e...? You raise a good point here, about the 'work' required. What killed roleplaying for me as a hobby, despite adoring it, was the work required to run a campaign - and the fact that it was very similar to the work I do professionally and so started to feel like a 'busman's holiday'. These days, I vicariously enjoy watching my kids play RPGs.
